The Tyrconnell is one of Ireland's most historic whiskey brands, with origins tracing back to the 18th century. The name was originally associated with the Watts distillery in Derry, which dates to 1762 and closed in the 1920s. The brand was revived in the late 20th century when it became part of the portfolio of Cooley Distillery, Ireland's first independent distillery founded in 1989. Alongside other storied names such as Kilbeggan, Lockes, and Millars, Tyrconnell brought deep heritage to the fledgling Cooley operation. Tyrconnell is an Irish single malt whiskey, setting it apart in a category long dominated by blends and pot still expressions. The core range includes The Tyrconnell single malt alongside a celebrated collection of 10 Year Old Cask Finishes — Madeira, Port, and Sherry — each offering a distinct flavour profile shaped by its finishing cask. The brand was a pioneer in this space: The Tyrconnell 10 Year Old Madeira Cask Finish was released as early as 2007, making it one of the first modern Irish whiskeys aged in Madeira casks. Limited expressions such as a 15 Year Old Madeira Cask Finish and a 16 Year Old further demonstrate the brand's commitment to age-statement whisky's of exceptional character.
