2007 SMWS 70.27 10y
About
This SMWS bottling is a cask strength release from Balblair, established in 1790 by John Ross in the Scottish Highlands. The SMWS designation (70.27) marks it as a curated single cask selection from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. The whisky spent ten years maturing in an ex-bourbon hogshead before a one-year finish in a second fill toasted grain cask—an unusual pairing that brings earthy and fiery dimensions to the fore. At 60.6% ABV, this dram carries considerable weight without losing balance. The nose reveals butter biscuits, a hint of sherry influence, and a faintly farmyard character. On the palate, the toasted grain cask finish makes itself known through smoky, mineral notes that cut against sweeter red apple and honey tones. The finish is long and dry, with earthy, forest-floor notes that linger.
