About
Oak Cross is Compass Box's most direct statement about oak's power in whisky. Founded by John Glaser in 2000, the independent blender created this expression around a single, deliberate idea: replace the heads of American oak casks with freshly toasted French oak. It's an unorthodox move—easier and more transparent than adding new wood inside—that forces two oak characters into direct conversation. The blend draws from three Highland distilleries: 60% Clynelish, 20% Dailuaine, and 20% Teaninich, all first matured in ex-bourbon barrels. The French oak heads add a layer of spice—clove, cinnamon—that cuts through the vanilla and honey softness of the American oak base. Bottled at 43%, non-chill-filtered, and of medium body, it sits in Compass Box's signature range as a teaching tool as much as a drink. The palate entry is deceptively gentle—vanilla, grain, a whisper of toffee—before the midpalate erupts with spice and bright fruit notes. The finish holds steady with oak and residual sweetness, never harsh, the two wood influences locked in a balance that feels intentional rather than accidental.
