About
The Peat Monster was born in 2003 from a collaboration between John Glaser of Compass Box and Jonathan Goldstein of Park Avenue Liquors in New York. What began as a bespoke bottling for that Manhattan shop became one of Compass Box's flagship releases. It is a blended malt of primarily Islay single malts—Laphroaig and Caol Ila—supplemented by Ardmore and Ledaig (Tobermory), a combination that balances elegance with intensity. The blend has evolved over two decades: the current recipe focuses on two core components, allowing the more refined, older Islay malts to shine. The constituent whiskies mature in American oak casks (first-fill and refill), contributing to the full, layered character. On the nose, floral perfume mingles with citrus and peat smoke. The palate reveals malty grains, sweet fruit, and dry spice, underpinned by a persistent but measured peatiness. The finish is clean and drying, without harshness. Bottled at 46% ABV without chill-filtering, The Peat Monster retains its natural complexity—equally at home neat or as the backbone of a well-made cocktail.
