About
Gouden Carolus takes its name from Emperor Charles V, who grew up in Flanders in the early 16th century and ruled the Netherlands among his many dominions. The beer brand of the same name, brewed by Het Anker in Mechelen, carries centuries of brewing tradition. This single malt is distilled from the grain mash of Gouden Carolus beer itself — an unusual choice that intertwines beer and whisky craftsmanship. The Anker Cask expression matures for 30 months in first fill bourbon casks, followed by a 6-month finish in Anker casks. These are re-coopered American oak vessels produced by Portuguese cooperage J., designed by Dr. Jim Swan, the whisky consultant who advised Gouden Carolus at its founding. On the palate, this whisky strikes a balance between malty sweetness and fruity character without overreaching for complexity. Vanilla and caramel lead, with notes of pepper and oak. The finish is medium to long, letting the textured malt qualities and oak influence settle pleasantly.
