American OakBourbon Barrel

About

Port Askaig launched in 2009 through Elixir Distillers, founded by Sukhinder Singh, with a deliberate mission: to redefine Islay whisky. While the island's reputation rests on intensity, Port Askaig pursued balance—fruit, smoke, and elegance in equal measure. The name takes its cue from the village harbour on Islay's northeast coast, historically the gateway to the island itself. This 3-year-old expression was matured in American oak casks before spending at least five years in toasted bourbon barrels—an unconventional recipe that yields an Islay single malt with more refinement than its peaty reputation might suggest. On the nose, ash-like peat smoke dominates with a medicinal edge, yet dried fruits emerge beneath. The palate brings unexpected sweetness—a hallmark that sets Port Askaig apart from many rougher Islay rivals—layered with subtle oak influence and a soft, smoky finish.
