About

The GlenAllachie was built in 1967 and designed by renowned distillery architect William Delmé-Evans. Under the stewardship of legendary whisky maker Billy Walker, the distillery has cultivated a culture of precision and patience. The 15 Years Old stands as a sherry-forward single malt with a distinctly full, dark character. Fifteen years of maturation in sherry casks has produced a deep mahogany hue. The whisky marries rich dried fruit with prominent oak structure, where vanilla, toffee and dark chocolate form the foundation. On the nose, treacle and chocolate lead, followed by dried apricots, figs and dates. The palate is syrupy with brown sugar, cherry sweets and orange zest, while ginger and coffee-like bitterness shape the finish. This is a dessert-style whisky that rewards patient nosing and sipping.

On the bottle and box I can't find the info easily, it's on sherry casks, (duh) but I think they're PX and Oloroso. And that combo with PX appeals to me. The balance on the nose is excellent, soft and sweet and oily, wood and creamy milk chocolate, cherry bonbon and caramel. I have many sherry (oloroso) matured whiskies, and often I notice a sour sharp edge, if the whisky has aged long enough that's less pronounced. But this one doesn't have that edge at all. First sip, and may I just say: f@ck hey, what a thing. The 46% gives it enough character to make an entrance, and immediately you notice the sweet coating that presents the flavors in a pleasant way. The aromas from the nose also come through in the taste, although there's a bolder presentation with good spiciness that makes this not a one-dimensional experience. I had done my homework, the 12y is ok, the 18y is more dominated by wood, and this one (15y) according to the youtubers has the perfect balance. And sure enough, this is a beautiful combination of the sweet fruity wood-driven chocolate whisky where I always noticed traces in sherry variants, but only now can I experience the whole of it. The price is completely fine (2026). As a beginner I had bought a CS 10Y, (batch 4) on the recommendation of Ralfy, but that was way too sharp for me. That kept me away from this brand for several years. But this one hits the mark perfectly. Nothing difficult, just a relaxed whisky to dream away with. A standard bottling, no CS or special release, no coloring or cold filtering, so a good bottling. And finally I understand why Billy Walker is so respected. Highly recommended!
