The Abyss 34 Year Old

About

Ardbeg The Abyss takes its name from the legendary Corryvreckan whirlpool that lies north of Islay, a place steeped in Norse mythology where Prince Breacan is said to have vanished into the depths. This 34-year-old single malt, limited to just 400 bottles, was matured in ultra-active French oak casks—an uncommon choice for such extended aging—and is presented in a bespoke metal capsule inspired by traditional diving and space suits, alongside a bespoke graphic novel. The whisky's character has been transformed by decades of maturation. Where Ardbeg's signature smoke dominates younger expressions, The Abyss has evolved into something more intricate: the peat recedes into the background, revealing layers of dark chocolate, toasted marshmallow, pecan pie, and leather. Notes of seaweed and creosote surface alongside toasty oak, while the finish lingers long with smoldering campfire ash and sugar. This is a whisky where time functions as an ingredient—not merely a measure, but a transformer. Bottled at cask strength (48.4%), it retains the full intensity of what four decades in wood have built.
