Cley Distillery in Rotterdam offers something rare through its Cask Friends programme: you fill your own small cask (60–70 litres) with new-make spirit and track maturation online. This is your whisky, literally. After four years, you receive an intense, youthful yet layered dram — triple-distilled from barley grown in Rhoon, just outside Rotterdam. Your cask choice shapes the character. Ex-bourbon wood brings vanilla and clean oak; a sherry finish adds raisins, apricot, and amber warmth. At 55% ABV, the whisky feels full and syrupy, with spice (clove, nutmeg, ginger) and apple-crumble notes. This is not traditional Scottish single malt — it is Dutch craft, young and unpolished, yet more layered than four years might suggest.
