About

Starkenberg is a whisky brand from Schloss Starkenberg in Tyrol, a historic brewery with a brewing tradition dating back to 1810. Its whisky production is much more recent: according to the producer, the oldest whisky casks have been maturing for over 20 years. This ten-year-old single malt reflects that alpine heritage. The spirit matures at approximately 63.5% ABV—a choice the distillery considers optimal for flavour development—before bottling at 43%. This whisky presents a light, clean character with subtle smoky-spicy notes at the outset. The nose is restrained—predominantly malty and cereal-driven, with only a hint of pepper and modest sweetness. On the palate, citrus fruit emerges alongside grain, though some tasting notes caution that the citrus can read sharp at times. The spirit drinks smoothly and easily, soft and pleasantly light—no heavy tannins or aggressive alcohol burn. This is a young malt that makes no pretence: a clean, approachable expression of Austrian whiskymaking.
