About
Tamdhu was founded in 1897 by a group of entrepreneurs led by William Grant, united by an ambition to create the world's finest whisky. The name derives from Gaelic for 'little dark hill'—a nod to the landscape surrounding Knockando in Speyside. For decades it served as a blending whisky, until Ian Macleod Distillers acquired the distillery in 2011 and set out to release Tamdhu as a single malt in its own right. The 18 Year Old marks that milestone: fully matured in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez, crafted from both European and American oak. Maturation in these traditional sherry vessels imparts a rich, dark character. The nose and palate are dominated by dry hazelnut and milk chocolate, underpinned by red fruit—blood orange, plum, blackcurrant—and warming spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. The finish is elegant and lingering, with hints of rum-raisin and citrus that add complexity. This is a whisky that measures its maturity not merely in years, but in refinement. The sherry casks have done their work without overwhelming the Speyside character—a well-balanced, sophisticated single malt that rewards patience.
