Cley Whisky was founded in 2015 by Paul den Dulk and Maria Neves at their micro-distillery in Rotterdam. Den Dulk trained in Hasselt, Belgium, and brought that artisanal approach to the Netherlands. The Cask Friends programme is distinctive: customers purchase their own cask and choose the finishing — making each bottle a personal creation. This is a young whisky at three years old, yet it drinks considerably older. The full, syrupy mouthfeel points to intensive cask interaction. Cley works with various cask types, including Oloroso and Tawny Port, which explains the richness of the profile. On the nose: fruity opening with raisins and apricots, followed by vanilla, coconut and caramel. Spices—clove, nutmeg, ginger—add structure. The finish brings chocolate and more fruit. This is no delicate whisky; it has a fine bitterness and sweetness in balance, with a silky texture despite the high strength.
