Scotch Malt Whisky Society Batch 39: The Five Regions 11 Year Old Blended Malt

About

Batch 39: The Five Regions is the result of a deliberate choice by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society to extend a previous experiment. In 2025, they released Batch 31: Wandering Alchemy—a blended malt composed of malts from all five Scottish whisky regions. A large portion of that batch was returned to original casks and left to marry for a year. Now the two portions have been recombined to produce Batch 39, a whisky that tastes considerably older than its 11-year age statement suggests. The blend draws malt from Highland, Speyside, Lowland, Campbeltown, and Islay, each region contributing its own voice. Maturation took place in bourbon, oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, and HTMC casks (heavy toast, medium char)—a combination that layers sweetness and smoke. The nose is described by the tasting panel as 'mouthwatering': an inviting collision of smoke and fruit that reflects Scotland's whisky geography. This is not a whisky that attempts to mimic a single region, but one that deliberately explores the tensions between them.
