About
Port Askaig is not a distillery but a brand created by Elixir Distillers in 2009, named after the small port on Islay's northeast coast—the gateway to the island. This 17-year-old 2023 release marks the company's revamped core range, with whisky matured for a minimum of 17 years in traditional American oak casks selected for their quality and age. Bottled at 50.5% ABV without colouring or chill-filtration, the whisky strikes a balance between youthful vivacity and mature complexity. The extended maturation in ex-bourbon wood has allowed the spirit to develop depth while preserving the island's character. On the nose: bonfire smoke, cut grass, orange peel, and wildflower notes. The palate brings polished oak, sweet fruit, and a restrained peat smoke that complements rather than dominates. The finish shows both sweet and tannic oak—a whisky that honours Islay's heritage without sacrificing refinement.
