Blended Malt Scotch Whisky

About

Rock Island is a blended malt from Douglas Laing that brings together four Scottish islands: Islay, Arran, Jura, and Orkney. The name references the Rock Island Line, the strait connecting the Orkney Islands to the mainland—a lifeline for island communities. Launched in 2015 as part of Douglas Laing's Remarkable Regional Malts series, Rock Island offers an accessible entry into the maritime character of Scotland's island whiskies. The blend combines the distinct profiles of four island distilleries into a single expression. The result is a whisky with real presence on the palate—mineral-driven, with a salty sea breeze that the nose already hints at. Peat is noticeable but restrained, supported by spice notes of cracked black pepper and subtle vanilla undertones. The nose opens with maritime elements: sea air, damp ash, and honey threading through. The palate delivers more salt and coastal character, layered with oatcake and building pepper. The finish is powerful and lingering, with a pleasant tingle and echoes of peat and sweetness.
