Cadenhead's, Scotland's oldest independent bottler since 1842 and part of the Springbank family since the early 1970s, selected this oloroso hogshead when their team visited the distillery in 2024. The result is a semi-official release that tempered Longrow's characteristic smoke with 23 years of Spanish sherry maturation. The nose reveals smoked fruit—strawberry jam, blackberries, cherries—but without the heavy peat you'd expect from Longrow. Instead, waxy notes emerge, old leather, cigar-box hints, and roasted almonds. On the palate, waxy fruitiness and medicinal notes give way to burnt wood, black pepper, and coffee, interspersed with tobacco and polished brassware. The finish is long and chocolatey, with ashy undertones. This is a whisky that feels evolved—sweet, subtly smoky, and balanced between Longrow's characteristic intensity and the refinement that 23 years in oloroso cask imparts. Not aggressive, but distinctly present.
