About
This is a SMWS bottling of Glenturret, a Highland distillery known for approachable, fruit-forward characters. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, founded in 1983 by Pip Hills, bottles single malts straight from the cask—no added colour, no chill filtration. This 13-year-old carries the playful name 'Smoky Hanky Panky', a nod to the classic cocktail (gin, Italian vermouth, fernet) but smoked: the SMWS panel drew inspiration from lapsang souchong tea. After 11 years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, the whisky was bottled at cask strength (57.8% ABV), preserving the full intensity of the wood. This is not a refined, subtle dram—it is smoky and direct, with strong notes of peat and wood smoke on the palate, supported by dry oak and peppery heat. Dried fruit and a hint of medicinal character add depth. A winter warmer that doesn't shy away from smoke and robustness. For those seeking Islay-style intensity but from a Highland source.
