Bourbon Hogshead

About

Watt Whisky selected this 10-year-old Strathmill from a bourbon hogshead for cask strength bottling. The distillery, located in Keith in Speyside, was originally founded in 1892 as Glenisla before taking its current name in 1895 following acquisition by gin producer W. & A. Gilbey. This is a classic Speyside single malt defined by its bourbon cask influence. The nose reveals layers of meringue, crème caramel and ripe yellow plums, joined by stewed apples and gooseberries, with a whisper of white pepper adding subtle bite. On the palate, a pleasant, lightly oily texture carries candyfloss and marshmallow alongside the same fruitiness found on the nose, enhanced by delicate spices—clove, nutmeg and ginger. The finish is medium-length with cooling notes of fennel and a grainy pear quality. A solid, well-balanced dram that will appeal especially to those drawn to vanilla-forward bourbon cask influence.
