18 Year Old 2008 Oloroso Sherry Hogshead
About
Glenkinchie from the Lowlands presents itself as an elegant and fruity single malt, enriched by an oloroso sherry cask. This 18-year-old whisky's balance between the distillery's delicate character and the full influence of the sherry cask makes it a compelling discovery. The result is a complex, well-structured dram with multiple layers of flavour. On the nose, a juicy sherry style emerges with sweet and sour berries to the fore—damsons, sour cherries, and hints of strawberry jam. Cinnamon and peppermint bring elegance, followed by subtle floral notes and light cocoa. On the palate, it becomes distinctly spicier and slightly tannic, with dried herbs, strong coffee, and winey notes. Toffee sweetness returns alongside red fruits and mint chocolate. The finish is medium to long, with peppery and floral notes, citrus, and toffee. While of good quality, the sherry cask dominates perhaps a touch too boldly over Glenkinchie's delicate spirit character. Nevertheless, an attractive bottling with considerable depth.
