About
Compass Box's Brûlée Royale is a blended malt that lives up to its name. The blend—primarily Benrinnes and Clynelish, with a touch of aged Speyburn and just 0.5% Ardbeg from toasted American oak—creates a whisky far gentler than Ardbeg alone. That 24-year-old Ardbeg component, matured in re-charred casks, adds smoke and scorched sugar without overwhelming the sweet centre. The nose and palate are dominated by crème brûlée character: vanilla, caramel, and that characteristic burnt sugar the name promises. The mouthfeel is thick and silky, with honey and toffee cut through by oak spice. The finish remains smoky, with a light bitterness that balances the sweetness. This isn't an Ardbeg whisky—it's a blended malt in which Ardbeg is an accent, not the lead. For those who want Ardbeg's intensity tempered with French pastry elegance.
