The Winter Queen II is a stern, serious blended malt whisky that demands respect and attention. This is no approachable crowd-pleaser, but rather a complex, dark and mature dram for the discerning whisky enthusiast. Matured for 19 years in refill sherry casks, it has developed considerable depth and an oily, full-bodied character. The nose reveals a fascinating interplay of rye bread and damp warehouse notes, alongside cocoa powder, freshly roasted dark coffee, apricots and maraschino cherries. The palate is rich with sherry influence, moist chocolate cake and bittersweet dark chocolate, complemented by spicy notes of black pepper, liquorice and cloves. Hints of bitter orange peek through, wrapped in toffee, while the long finish delivers dark chocolate and a lingering warmth.
