About
Compass Box marks 25 years as an independent blending house with this reissue of Flaming Heart, named after a folk song by M. Ward—a choice that reflects the house's rebellious ethos, treating whisky and music as parallel acts of creative defiance. This seventh edition (2022) marries peated malts from Islay (Laphroaig, Caol Ila, Talisker) with Highland blended malt, finished in heavily toasted virgin French oak casks. That French oak layer adds textural complexity beneath the smoke. The nose opens with burnt, smouldering character—charcoal and embers—but sweetness lurks underneath: honey, vanilla, maple. On the palate, wild spices and pepper erupt, alongside that signature peated campfire note and vegetal smoke. The finish runs long and medicinal, almost herbal. This is not a smooth dram; it demands attention and rewards it.
