Compass Box, the London-based independent bottler, partnered with Bimber Distillery, a craft producer in West London, in 2023—a deliberate departure from their long-standing tradition of sourcing only Scottish malts. Duality marks their first venture beyond that boundary. The name captures the philosophy: a blend that holds two distinct worlds in tension without letting either dominate. The recipe is precise: 60% peated whisky matured in ex-bourbon barrels and 40% unpeated whisky finished in ex-sherry casks. This ratio creates internal balance—smoke and sweetness in conversation rather than conflict. On the nose, tropical fruit and honey emerge first, quickly shadowed by briny and smoky notes. The palate mirrors this economy: fruit and smoke in direct conversation, little middle ground. The finish is clean and brief, smoke lingering to the end. This is a whisky that doesn't demand extended contemplation—it rewards straightforward, honest drinking.
