With a robust age of 13 years, this expression exemplifies the craftsmanship and tradition that Edradour is known for, showcasing the rich heritage of one of Scotland's smallest distilleries. On the palate, the whisky delivers a harmonious blend of sweet vanilla and caramel, derived from its maturation in first-fill bourbon casks. Notes of dried fruits and subtle spices from sherry cask influence add complexity, while the high ABV of 59.10% ensures a bold and intense flavor profile. At first, I didn't know what to make of it, the alcohol was dominant and the whole thing was overwhelming. The bottle sat in my collection for several years, but as time passed and I smelled the bottle again, the aroma became sweeter, more subtle and very pleasant. Now that the whisky has been tempered by time, it turns out to be a soft, subtle whisky. It's funny how the very first taste seems to contain a smoky sharpness, but that also disappears quickly. Then vanilla and honey, hay, cookie dough, stone fruit, cherries, beeswax, and the specific dark undertone of Edradour that supports it all. The finish is not very long. The alcohol is now exceptionally well integrated. The soft waxy honey-sweetness and the subtle bitterness balance each other out. With a few drops of water, cookie dough aroma and flavor come to the fore, with even more water the whole thing becomes sharper and more bitter, pricks more on the tongue and a sweetwood flavor emerges. A special whisky with specific character and interesting debatable characteristics. A personality that doesn't reveal itself easily. That's why Edradour is among my favorites.
