About
Hakushu was established by Suntory in 1973 in the densely forested Southern Japanese Alps, perched above 700 metres elevation. This setting — surrounded by coniferous forest and mountain streams — shapes every whisky made there. The Distiller's Reserve is an approachable, bright single malt that distils Hakushu's philosophy: refinement through terroir, not complexity. The whisky blends lightly peated Hakushu matured in ex-bourbon casks with other Suntory components, yielding a crisp, herbaceous profile. At 43% ABV it's substantial enough to drink neat, but designed for flexibility — traditionally enjoyed as a highball with ice and water. On the nose: green apples, lemon zest, grass and a whisper of smoke. The palate is tangy and refreshing, driven by citrus peel and a faint saline smoke, supported by dry oak. The finish is short and clean, no heavy tannins. This is whisky without pretence: crystalline, aromatic, made for everyday pleasure.
