About
Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2021 Edition is a distinguished single malt whisky crafted by Kilchoman Distillery, located on the rugged shores of Islay, Scotland. Known for its commitment to traditional production methods, Kilchoman is one of the island's few farm distilleries, producing whisky from barley grown on their own land. This edition is matured exclusively in Oloroso sherry casks, resulting in a rich and complex profile. Tasting notes reveal dark chocolate, dried fruit, and a hint of smoke, complemented by a luxurious mouthfeel. The 46% ABV enhances its bold flavors, making it a perfect choice for both connoisseurs and newcomers to the world of whisky. With its unique character and craftsmanship, Loch Gorm 2021 stands out as a remarkable expression of Islay's whisky heritage.

Immediately a heavy sweet oily smoke hits me from the glass. Underneath it sits the sweet sherry that pairs beautifully with the smoky aroma. It says it's a subtle smoke, but I find this a fatty sweet intoxicating all-over experience. After a while a mineral sandy note emerges for me, surrounded by the idea of sticky sherry sweetness. That sticky sweetness makes the experience pleasantly carnival-like, I can go through all the extreme flavors, from fatty oily smoky to mineral smoke, but there's always that sweetness that envelops everything, without dominating too much. For a whisky of 9+ years this is beautifully subtly integrated. I taste the salty Islay flavor, somewhere it reminds me of the Ardbeg Uigeadail, and it has something of the Port Charlotte 10y. And I have to think somewhere of the sandy smoke of Benromach. Of course it could be an interpretation of general smokiness. (Because I experience this same thing, as well as the lovely tingling on the tongue and the sweet smoky sticky lingering aftertaste also with Ballechin 19y Bourboncask. The subtle nice bite of the 46% immediately fades in the mouth and makes way for a sweet tingling party, dark red fruit, figs, anise, carnival lollipop that's smoking after being rescued from a campfire. And then that typical Islay aftertaste that lingers. I would unknowingly give this many more years than 9. Well done Kilchoman! An intoxicating party to let wash over you in your lazy chair. This is a layered cuddle monster. I have no criticisms of this delightful adventurous whisky.
