About

Ballechin 2009 Orange Wine Cask Finish is a distinguished single malt whisky from the Edradour distillery, located in the Highland region of Scotland. With 15 years of maturation, this whisky showcases the craftsmanship and tradition of one of Scotland's smallest distilleries, offering a unique insight into Highland whisky production. Upon tasting, you will discover a complex flavor profile featuring fresh and dried fruits, with notes of citrus and tropical fruit harmonizing beautifully. The whisky is enriched by its sherry cask and first fill wine cask finish, adding layers of oak, almond, and dried spices. Its bold ABV of 54.10% ensures a rich mouthfeel, complemented by hints of briny seaweed and a subtle smokiness. This expression has not only garnered attention for its unique finish but also reflects the innovative spirit of Edradour distillery's approach to whisky-making.

Edradour Ballechin 15 Huerva This is one of my favorite whiskies, and for the price I will rate it higher than the truly expensive variants, because this one can hold its own in comparison. It is not a beginner's whisky. First there is the Ballechin smoke, but not overpowering, but in a beautiful integrated collaboration with the sweet influence of the Huelva sherry. That collaboration becomes a flavorful and aromatic symbiosis, a unity with sweet notes underneath, somewhat like a moscatel finish whisky. Here too the distillate is powerfully autonomous present, allowing the aromas and flavors to integrate without dominating anywhere. Beneath the sweet wood with smoke aroma and taste, ultimately a sweet candy-like taste comes in, especially after adding a few drops of water. I have to think of orange tic tacs, along with a hint of sweet lemon flavor, licorice, and something of the pine/mint aroma, but that will be the smoke again. After spending some time in the glass and adding a few drops of water it becomes very smooth, sweet, and lingers long in mouth and nose. An oddball from Edradour, but a unique bull's-eye of my personal taste experience.
