About
Compass Box founder John Glaser created The Peat Monster in 2003 in collaboration with Jonathan Goldstein of Park Avenue Liquors in New York. What began as a bespoke bottling for that retailer became one of Compass Box's flagship releases. The label, designed by Stranger & Stranger, captures the whisky's dramatic character with swirling smoke and gothic imagery. The whisky later became the original smoky component in the modern cocktail The Penicillin, created by bartender Sam Ross at Milk & Honey in 2005. The blend draws from peated Islay single malts: primarily Caol Ila (matured in refill hogsheads, bourbon barrels, and refill puncheons) with Williamson. Maturation is in American oak with a small portion in French oak, bottled without chill-filtering at 46% ABV. On the nose, peat smoke and malty grain emerge with layered depth. The palate delivers roasted malt sweetness with persistent smoke, building toward a finish that lingers with charred oak and maritime smoke. This is a whisky for those who seek genuine peat character—uncompromising and complex.
