About
Arran is a relatively young distillery—founded in 1993 by Harold Currie, former director of Chivas—yet has built a solid reputation in three decades. The Port Cask Finish belongs to Arran's Wine Cask Finishes series, where the distillery experiments with the influence of different wine casks on its single malt. This whisky matures for roughly eight years in traditional oak before spending additional time in port casks. That process gives the dram its character: the port adds dark fruit, honey, and a full, rich texture to the underlying malty foundation. On the nose, stewed dark fruit—mainly blackberries and black cherries—with honey and hazelnut notes. The palate is rather sweet, with strong port influence, dark fruits, crème brûlée, and red berries in the background. The finish opens peppery and offers a mix of sweetness, dark fruit, and earthy notes, with immediate impact. A dessert dram that carries its full 50% ABV well—another solid release from a distillery proving that young doesn't have to mean unripe.
