Torabhaig has released an impressive 7-year-old single malt finished in Scottish oak – a notoriously challenging wood that distillers rarely employ. This exclusive bottling for The Whisky Exchange represents a distinctive release showcasing the complexities and rewards of this unconventional cask type. With only 251 bottles produced, this ranks among the rarer Torabhaig expressions to date.

Bottled at 58.7% ABV, this single cask (#2829) was released in January 2025. Scottish oak is porous and infamously difficult to work with, explaining why distillers typically favour American or European oak. The result here achieves a compelling balance: the oak adds considerable depth and complexity without overwhelming the spirit.

Tasting Profile

The nose reveals deep smokiness with aniseed, mint, and bacon over wood fire, followed by damp leaves, green apple, and resinous notes with subtle floral touches. On the palate, the oak becomes sharper – dark smoke with fresh tar, peppermint, and sweetened black tea. Citrus, salted caramel, and dark chocolate develop, leading to a long, sharp, peaty finish with salty and green pepper notes.
