Shirakawa 1958: A Legendary Japanese Whisky Rediscovered

Shirakawa 1958 is an exceptionally rare Japanese single malt whisky, distilled in 1958 at the now-closed Shirakawa Distillery in Fukushima Prefecture. This historic spirit represents a unique window into Japan's pioneering whisky era. With only 1,500 bottles released, it ranks among the world's rarest whiskies and now features prominently on the premium whisky menu at Gordon Ramsay's Lucky Cat restaurant in London.

Aged 64 years and bottled at 49% ABV, this spirit matured in Mizunara oak casks. Shirakawa Distillery, established in 1939, produced malt whisky from 1951 to 1969, becoming one of Japan's earliest producers. After closure in 2003, the stock lay dormant in stainless steel tanks at Takara Shuzo's Kyushu facility until Tomatin's managing director Stephen Bremner discovered it in 2019.

The nose reveals perfumed notes of exotic incense, citrus, and resinous character. On the palate, caramel, pepper, and smoke emerge, concluding with ginger and a smoky finish. This is a dram for collectors and enthusiasts of Japanese whisky history, offering a tangible connection to a lost distillery and a transformative era of Japanese spirits production.
