Mars Komagatake 2017 7 Year Old Yakushima Ageing

Mars Komagatake releases an exclusive single cask through The Whisky Exchange. This 7-year-old bourbon barrel (57% ABV) from the Sumo series was matured in the warm Yakushima ageing cellar on Japan's southern island. It marks the fifth entry in the Sumo series, named after the classical sumo finishing move tsukidashi.

Mars matures its whisky across three distinct locations: Shinshu (at the distillery), Tsunuki, and Yakushima. Japanese distillers place significant emphasis on how maturation location influences character—a philosophy this release exemplifies. Yakushima's warm climate has clearly shaped this whisky's profile.

On the nose, fresh citrus (lemon and lime) mingles with tarte tatin and barley notes, alongside vanilla, mint, and juniper-like medicinal qualities. The palate reveals pineapple, green apples, and pears with yuzu, peppermint, and lemon verbena. A subtle metallic note and ginger biscuits add complexity, with creamy vanilla returning softly. The finish is lengthy and aromatic—mint, camphor, and citrus dominate.
