Caol Ila 2010 by Berry Bros & Rudd

A stunning 15-year-old Caol Ila from Berry Bros & Rudd, the oldest independent bottler, has arrived on the Dutch market through Craft Spirits Company. This robust Islay single malt masterfully blends peat and sherry, making it a compelling release for enthusiasts seeking complexity and character in their whisky.

Production and Maturation

This expression followed a dual maturation approach: initial aging in bourbon casks, followed by approximately 4 years of finishing in ex-oloroso casks. This careful progression allows the characteristic Islay smoke to interact beautifully with the rich, fruity influence of Spanish sherry wood, creating a multi-layered drinking experience.

Tasting Profile

On the nose, the whisky opens with a smouldering ashtray, warm smoked red fruit, and kiln turf. Orange peel, damp forest floor, and warm caramel sauce emerge alongside. The palate delivers campfire ash, cigar ash, and red fruits (smoked strawberry and raspberry), complemented by peat, sea salt, espresso, and walnuts. The finish is surprisingly long, featuring orange peel, ash, clove, and sweet tobacco.

The Verdict

This is a powerful, well-crafted Caol Ila with excellent balance between smoke and sweetness—ideal for peat-lovers seeking an elegant closing dram.
