Aberargie Inaugural: A Perthshire Promise

Aberargie marks the inaugural release from a new farm-to-bottle distillery in Perthshire, owned by the Morrison family with five generations of whisky heritage. This 6-year-old single malt represents a carefully considered introduction—the first casks were filled in 2017, underscoring the team's patient approach to bringing their whisky to market.

The whisky's composition reflects its farm-to-bottle philosophy: 52% heritage Golden Promise barley and modern Laureate barley, both grown on the family's 300-acre farm. Maturation occurred in equal parts first-fill bourbon and first-fill sherry casks, resulting in a well-balanced dram at 48.2% ABV. This pairing creates an interesting interplay between American oak and sherry influences.

On the nose, expect stewed apple, honey, and honeyed cereals, complemented by sherry-driven aromas of raisins and toasted nuts. The palate is thick and spicy, with red apples, pears, and raisins, followed by grassy and gingery notes alongside prominent barley character. The finish is medium, displaying dark chocolate, wood spice, and cereal notes.

This is a promising debut for Aberargie. While some may find the oak presence slightly pronounced, the inaugural release demonstrates craftsmanship and distinctive character. For enthusiasts of farm-to-bottle whisky and heritage grains, this is a compelling discovery.
