Lochranza Distillery, situated at the northern tip of the Isle of Arran off the west coast of Scotland, holds a special place in Scottish whisky history. When it opened in 1995, it ended nearly 160 years without legal whisky production on the island. Construction began in 1994, driven by the vision of Harold Currie, who was inspired by fellow industry veteran David Hutchison β who also designed the distillery. The first spirit ran from the stills on June 29, 1995, marking the revival of a proud island tradition. The distillery is capable of producing around one million litres of alcohol per year. Its pot stills are notably wide and round at the bottom, with no reflux bowls, a design choice that contributes to the characteristically rich and fruity spirit for which Arran is known. The first bottles were released in 2001 and are now sold worldwide. In 1997, the visitors' centre was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, underscoring the cultural significance of the distillery. Lochranza is also a patron of the World Robert Burns Federation and has created both a Robert Burns single malt and a Robert Burns blended whisky in honour of Scotland's national poet. The distillery welcomes visitors to its scenic location on the Isle of Arran, offering an experience that combines outstanding whisky with breathtaking natural surroundings.
