Karuizawa

Karuizawa Distillery, located in Japan, was established in 1955 and operated until its closure in 2011. Originally founded by the Shinjiko Company, it was known for producing high-quality single malt whisky. Although the distillery is now closed, it has gained a significant following among whisky enthusiasts and collectors due to its limited production and unique character. The distillery was situated at the base of the active volcano, Mount Asama, which contributed to the distinctive qualities of its whiskies. With an annual production capacity of 150,000 liters, Karuizawa utilized traditional pot stills and a variety of cask types, including sherry casks, to mature its whisky. The flavor profile is renowned for its rich fruitiness and complexity, with prominent notes of plum and spices on the nose, followed by sweet and herbaceous flavors on the palate. The finish is characterized by a delightful combination of sweet malt, peat smoke, and nutty undertones. Notable expressions include the Karuizawa 12 Years - 2000 Asama and the highly sought-after Karuizawa 32 Years Sherry Cask Shinanoya, showcasing the distillery's exceptional craftsmanship and the influence of its unique environment.
