Yamazaki is Japan's first and oldest malt whisky distillery, established in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory. Located at the foot of Mt. Tennozan, southwest of Kyoto, the distillery was built in a region historically prized for its pure water and misty climate — conditions long considered ideal for crafting fine spirits. Torii, originally a pharmaceutical wholesaler who made his name selling Akadama sweet red wine, set out to create a uniquely Japanese whisky that would stand alongside the great Scotch traditions. What sets Yamazaki apart is its philosophy of producing a wide multiplicity of styles within a single distillery. By using varied still shapes, fermentation vessels, and cask types, Yamazaki crafts whiskies of remarkable diversity. The core portfolio centers around four celebrated single malts: the Distiller's Reserve, and the 12, 18, and 25-year-old expressions. These releases are known for their elegance, complexity, and a delicate balance of fruit, spice, and oak that is distinctly Japanese in character. Over the decades, Yamazaki has grown from a pioneering local experiment into a globally revered icon. The distillery continued to expand Suntory's whisky range through the 1940s and 1950s, and today Yamazaki single malts are widely regarded as benchmarks of Japanese whisky craftsmanship, attracting both collectors and investors around the world.
