Waterford Distillery was founded in 2015 by Mark Reynier, the visionary entrepreneur who previously revived Bruichladdich on Islay. Located in Waterford in the south of Ireland, the distillery was established in a converted former Guinness brewery, with distillation beginning in early 2016. From its inception, Waterford grabbed the attention of the whisky world with its bold and unconventional philosophy. At the heart of Waterford's approach is the concept of terroir — the idea that the land, soil, and farming practices fundamentally shape the character of whisky. Reynier and his team work with 97 separate farms across Ireland, some of them organic and biodynamically run, sourcing barley from each individually. This meticulous traceability is reflected in their Single Farm Origin releases, where each expression is named after the specific farm that grew the barley, offering an unprecedented level of transparency in whisky production. Waterford spells its whisky without the traditional Irish 'e', a deliberate nod to its terroir-driven philosophy that sets it apart from convention. Since its first releases — including the celebrated Ballykilcaven and Bannow Island expressions — the distillery has continued to challenge how the whisky world thinks about ingredients, provenance, and flavour.
