Speyside, Scotland · Founded in 1965
Tomintoul Distillery was founded in 1965 by whisky-broking firms Hay & MacLeod and W. & S. Strong, part of the boom that swept across the Scotch whisky industry during that decade. Located near the village of Tomintoul — the highest village in the Highlands of Scotland — the distillery sits in the heart of the Speyside region, a landscape that profoundly shapes its character. In 1973, Whyte & Mackay acquired the distillery, after which it served primarily as a source for blended whiskies. Angus Dundee Distillers, owned by the Hillman family, eventually took ownership and continues to operate Tomintoul today. Conceived from the outset as a modern Speyside distillery focused on a light, gentle spirit, Tomintoul has built its reputation on smooth, approachable and elegantly crafted single malts. The house style leans toward delicate, easy-drinking expressions that showcase the refined character typical of the region. This accessibility has made Tomintoul a favourite among both newcomers to whisky and seasoned enthusiasts alike. Tomintoul has earned its place in the record books as well: in 2009, the distillery entered the Guinness Book of World Records by producing the largest bottle of whisky in the world, containing an impressive 105.3 litres of 14-year-old single malt.
