Tomatin

/tom-AT-in/

Tomatin Distillery was established in 1897 in the small village of Tomatin, nestled in the Scottish Highlands near Inverness. The distillery's early years were turbulent — its first operation ran only from 1897 to 1906, before reopening under new management in 1909. From those humble beginnings, surrounded by shepherds and cattle herders rather than an established workforce, Tomatin grew into one of Scotland's most distinctive Highland distilleries. A significant chapter in its history came in 1985, when two Japanese companies stepped in to save the struggling distillery, making Tomatin one of the first Scotch whisky producers to be acquired by Japanese ownership. Tomatin now operates 12 stills and draws its water from the Alt-na-Frith, or 'Free Burn', a pristine local water source that contributes to the distillery's characteristic style. The core range includes expressions aged 12, 18, 30, and 36 years, complemented by a wide variety of limited editions. In 2010 the distillery further expanded its portfolio with additional releases. The whisky's style reflects the gentle, approachable character typical of Highland malts, with depth and complexity that rewards patient exploration.
