Togouchi is a Japanese whisky brand produced by Chugoku Jozo, a company established in 1918 on the outskirts of Hiroshima, primarily known for its sake and shōchu production. In 1990, Chugoku Jozo began blending whisky under the Togouchi name, creating one of Japan's most distinctive and unconventional whisky labels. The brand is closely associated with the Sakurao Distillery, which underwent a significant relaunch in 2024, at which point Togouchi Whisky transitioned to using 100% Japanese barley. What truly sets Togouchi apart is its remarkable maturation process: the whisky is aged in an old railway tunnel nestled in the Japanese mountains, where the consistent cool temperature and high humidity create ideal conditions for ageing. The portfolio spans several expressions, including blended, pure malt, and single malt whisky's, with aged variants such as the 8-year-old and expressions matured in bourbon and sherry casks. A cask strength release has also been part of the lineup, showcasing the brand's range. Togouchi has earned a reputation as one of the most unusual and intriguing whisky's to emerge from Japan. Its tunnel-ageing method, combined with a refined approach to blending and maturation, has attracted whisky enthusiasts worldwide seeking something genuinely different from the Japanese whisky landscape.
