Islay, Scotland · Founded in 1798
Tobermory Distillery is the only Scotch whisky distillery on the Hebridean island of Mull, Scotland, founded in 1798 by John Sinclair under the original name Ledaig (pronounced 'Let-chick'). Nestled in the colorful harbor town of Tobermory, the distillery overlooks the bay and has had a remarkably turbulent history — it has been silent for more than half of its entire existence, with its first closure occurring between 1837 and 1878. Despite these setbacks, Tobermory has proven to be a true survivor, boasting over 200 years of whisky-making heritage. Today, Tobermory Distillery produces two distinct single malt expressions, offering whisky lovers a fascinating contrast in styles. The Tobermory expression is an unpeated, approachable single malt, while the Ledaig expression — a nod to the distillery's original name — is a heavily peated, maritime whisky that reflects the rugged character of the Isle of Mull. This dual identity makes Tobermory one of the most unique distilleries in Scotland, capable of satisfying both those who favor delicate, fruity drams and those who seek bold, smoky complexity.
