Speyside, Scotland · Founded in 1824
The Glenlivet is one of Scotland's most iconic single malt Scotch whisky distilleries, founded in 1824 by George Smith in the Livet Valley, nestled in the heart of the Speyside region. It holds the distinction of being the first legal distillery in the Highlands following the Excise Act of 1823, which brought illicit distilling into the regulated fold. Situated high above the River Livet with views towards Cardhu and the slopes of Ben Rinnes, the distillery has operated on its current site since 1859. The Glenlivet is celebrated for its approachable, elegant style — unpeated single malts characterised by floral, fruity, and honeyed notes that have become the benchmark for Speyside whisky. With an impressive production capacity of 21 million litres and 28 stills, the distillery is one of the largest in Scotland. The portfolio ranges from the entry-level Founder's Reserve to aged expressions such as the 18-Year-Old and rare collector's releases, including the extraordinary Generations 80 Year Old drawn from an Oloroso sherry cask. Today, The Glenlivet is owned by Pernod Ricard through Chivas Brothers, following Seagram's acquisition of a controlling stake in 1978. Consistently recognised as one of the world's best-selling single malts, The Glenlivet has set the gold standard for Speyside whisky for two centuries.
