The English Whisky Co. is England's oldest registered whisky distillery, founded in 2006 by the Nelstrop family in Norfolk. At the time of its founding, it was the first dedicated whisky distillery in England in well over a century, making it a true pioneer in the revival of English whisky. Operating from St. George's Distillery in Norfolk, the Nelstrop family set out with a clear mission: to produce world-class single malt whisky that could stand proudly alongside the great whisky traditions of Scotland and Ireland. The distillery matures all of its casks and bottles all of its whisky on-site, maintaining full control over the entire production process. This hands-on approach reflects the founding philosophy of James Nelstrop, who wanted to craft whisky worthy of sharing with friends — and the world. The English has steadily built a reputation for quality single malts with a distinctly English character, drawing on the fertile Norfolk landscape and local ingredients. As the oldest whisky distillery in England, The English continues to reach new milestones. In 2025, the distillery released The English 18 Years Old, marking a significant coming-of-age moment not just for the brand, but for English whisky as a whole. Their work has helped inspire the broader English whisky movement, contributing to the establishment of the English Whisky Guild in May 2022.
