Islay, Scotland · Founded in 1892
The Balvenie is a celebrated single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside. Founded in 1892 by William Grant, the distillery was built next to the already established Glenfiddich distillery, with Grant repurposing Balvenie Castle's estate for his new venture. The Balvenie is owned by William Grant & Sons, one of the last remaining family-owned whisky companies in Scotland, a legacy that continues to shape the distillery's independent, craft-driven spirit. The Balvenie holds a unique distinction in the Scotch whisky world: it is the only distillery to grow its own barley, operate traditional floor maltings, and maintain on-site coppersmiths — a trio of traditions that gives its whiskies a distinctive handcrafted character. The first official bottling as a standalone single malt was released in 1971, and since then the portfolio has grown to encompass a wide range of expressions, from the youthful DoubleWood 12 Year Old to the extraordinarily rare Balvenie 50 and 60 Year Old releases. Guided by the expertise of its Malt Master, the range is known for its rich, honeyed complexity. The Balvenie has earned widespread critical acclaim and numerous awards over the years. Landmark releases such as The Balvenie Sixty, priced at $145,000, demonstrate the distillery's ambition and the exceptional quality it can achieve through decades of patient maturation.
