Highland, Scotland · Founded in 1817
Teaninich is a Highland Scotch whisky distillery located near the village of Alness in the north of Scotland. Founded in 1817 by Captain Hugh Munro, a celebrated war hero, the distillery was subsequently managed by him and his brother, General John Munro. It stands as one of Scotland's earliest distilleries, with a history stretching back more than two centuries. The distillery was sold to Scottish Malt Distillers in 1933 and has been part of the Diageo portfolio since the 1990s, having previously been owned by the Distiller's Company Ltd (DCL) since the 1930s. Teaninich is known for producing unpeated Highland malt whisky that plays a vital role in some of the world's most iconic blended Scotch whiskies, including Johnnie Walker and J&B. While the distillery primarily operates as a workhorse for blending purposes, limited single malt expressions have been released over the years, most notably through Diageo's classic Flora and Fauna range. These bottlings reveal a whisky of notable depth, typically displaying grassy, herbal and lightly spiced characteristics that reflect the northern Highland terroir. Despite its relatively low profile among whisky enthusiasts, Teaninich enjoys a strong reputation among blenders for the consistent quality and character of its spirit. Independent bottlers have also occasionally shone a spotlight on the distillery, helping to cultivate a dedicated following among those who appreciate understated, elegant Highland malts.
