T.W. Samuels is one of Kentucky's oldest bourbon distilling legacies, rooted in a family tradition that stretches back generations. Taylor William "T.W." Samuels, a third-generation distiller born on January 9, 1821, established the T.W. Samuels Distillery in Deatsville, Kentucky in 1844. The distillery was subsequently run by T.W. and his son W.I. Samuels, cementing the family's prominent place in Kentucky bourbon history. The Samuels family's distilling roots are said to trace back as far as 1780, making them one of the most storied distilling dynasties in American whiskey. The T.W. Samuels brand produced Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey rooted in a generations-old family recipe. However, the brand's chapter came to a close in the 1950s when the T.W. Samuels family sold their distillery and their trademarks. Notably, Bill Samuels Sr., finding the T.W. Samuels flavor profile not to his liking, famously burnt the 170-year-old family recipe before starting fresh — ultimately going on to found Maker's Mark. Today, Heaven Hill Distillery has carried on the T.W. Samuels name, keeping this historic Kentucky bourbon brand alive for a new generation of whiskey enthusiasts.
