St. Magdalene/Linlithgow

St. Magdalene, also known as Linlithgow, is one of Scotland's most historically significant and now-silent Lowland distilleries. Located in the ancient royal burgh of Linlithgow in the Scottish Lowlands, the distillery is believed to have origins dating back to around 1750, making it one of the oldest whisky-producing sites in Scotland. It operated for well over two centuries before its stills were removed and the distillery was permanently closed in 1983, bringing an end to a remarkable chapter in Scottish whisky history. As a Lowland single malt, St. Magdalene was known for producing whisky in the lighter, more approachable style characteristic of the region. Bottlings from independent bottlers such as Ian MacLeod's Chieftains range have kept the legacy alive, offering collectors rare glimpses into expressions distilled in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A cask distilled in 1970 and matured for 23 years is among the notable releases that have surfaced at auction. Today, St. Magdalene/Linlithgow is considered one of the most collectable of all closed Scottish distilleries. Remaining casks have appeared in prestigious collections such as Diageo's Prima & Ultima series, where it was noted as one of the rarest components. Its bottles command significant attention at auction, and its reputation among whisky enthusiasts continues to grow with each passing year as stocks dwindle further.
