Silkie is an Irish whiskey brand created by Sliabh Liag Distillers, founded in 2014 by James Doherty and his wife Moira in Donegal, on Ireland's rugged northwestern coast. The brand takes its name from the legendary Silkie seals of Donegal folklore — mythical shapeshifters said to transform from seal to enchanting sea maiden along the wild coastline. The first release, The Legendary Silkie, a blended Irish whiskey, was launched in 2016, with the distillery beginning its own legal distillation operations in 2017. The Silkie range is crafted from a blend of grain and malted barley, offering whisky's that are smooth and rewarding while exploring varying levels of peated smoke — a bold nod to Irish whiskey's rural and rustic roots. The lineup includes expressions such as The Legendary Silkie and the more intensely peated Midnight Silkie, the smokiest release in the range. Some expressions also make use of distinctive cask finishes, including Bordeaux wine casks, to further develop the flavour profile.
