Shizuoka Distillery is a craft Japanese whisky producer founded in 2016 by Taiko Nakamura, located in Shizuoka Prefecture — a region celebrated for its agricultural richness and natural beauty. Nakamura's inspiration came from a transformative trip to Scotland, where encountering a working distillery sparked his vision to bring that same spirit of craft distilling to Japan. The distillery is owned and operated by Gaia Flow, a respected Japanese whisky importer with deep roots in the industry. Shizuoka quickly distinguished itself through a dual approach to production, utilizing both its own modern Forsyths copper pot stills — a 5,000-litre wash still and a 3,500-litre spirit still — and a piece of living whisky history: stills acquired from the legendary, now-demolished Karuizawa Distillery. This rare combination allows Shizuoka to produce whisky's with a remarkable range of character, blending modern precision with the heritage of one of Japan's most mythologized distilleries. Despite being a young distillery, Shizuoka gained immediate acclaim upon its debut release, with critics praising its impressive whisky's for their complexity and quality well beyond their age. It is widely regarded as one of the most exciting next-generation Japanese whisky producers to watch.
